I feel like we have an awesome relationship. She confides in me and is really easy to live with.

Things could be better. There are times she opens up to me and I enjoy her. But then for no reason she is so disrespectful, loses it or hides in her room.

I’m counting the days till she moves out. Of course I love her but to be honest there are many days I don’t like her. I’m so tired of the drama.

I enjoy the teenage years. My family appreciates me. I feel rested, energized and grateful. I’m living my purpose. I wouldn’t change a thing.

I know I should be grateful and many times I am, but I’m just so exhausted. I feel like I’m taking care of everyone but me. I know all the things I “should” be doing for myself; but really there are just not enough hours in the day.

I do so much for my family and they don’t do anything for me. If I’m being honest I’m miserable half the time and really resent this stage of my life. My daughter treats me like I’m her personal assistant.

I’m on top of things. I’m clear about the rules, boundaries and consequences. I don’t react. I have a parenting strategy that works. My kids are doing great.

I work hard as a parent. It’s my number one priority. But if I’m being truthful I worry a lot about my kids and wonder if I’m doing the right things.

I feel like a terrible mom and I’m failing at parenting. I’m either walking on eggshells or I get angry because my daughter knows exactly what buttons to push.

4. How clear and prepared am I for the teenage years? Well . . . *

I’m super clear. I understand the science of the teenage brain. I’m clear about the boundaries, rules, and consequences. My partner and I are on the same page. I have a proactive parenting strategy.

I’ve gone to parenting classes and have read some helpful books. There are times I’m clear about my parenting, but it’s hard to implement. Things change quickly and then I find myself second-guessing my rules, boundaries, and consequences. My daughter is often pushing me and then I doubt myself. I spend too much time worrying if I’m doing the right thing.

I feel like I’m in a Mother Fog. There are so many things going on that I get blindsided by something my daughter said or did. I just don’t have the energy to deal with her so I find myself reacting most of the time to her teenage antics.

Exhausted Mom: This mom is trying hard and is doing the work. She volunteers and is active in her daughter’s life. It feels selfish to pay attention to her needs so she puts her family first and hopes to get her time. But the demands of her family take up her time so she ends up exhausted—and her family knows it.

Exasperated Mom: When you combine exhausted mom with years of drama and little support you get exasperated mom. This mom feels irritated, stressed, anxious, tired or frustrated the majority of time. She rarely feels gratitude, joy, and contentment. Resentment is her default emotion because she hasn’t had her needs met in a long time. Because an exasperated mom has no reserves, it’s easy to lose it with her daughter.
